Ron Jackson Suresha is an editor, anthologist, and activist with seven books to his credit and more than 16,000 copies in print. He is considered an authority on emergent queer masculinities, in particular the subcultures of gay and bi male Bears and of male bisexuality. In 2002, Suresha authored the groundbreaking GLBTQ studies book, Bears on Bears: Interviews & Discussions, which included interviews with comedian Bruce Vilanch and "Survivor" Richard Hatch. The book has been cited as the first nonfiction book compiled primarily using Internet discussions, acclaimed by the Village Voice as "required reading for anyone interested in gender studies," and noted as Alyson Publication's top-selling book in May 2002.
Suresha is also the editor of several innovative and popular men's erotic fiction anthologies, including Bearotica (Alyson 2002), and Bear Lust (Alyson 2004), which was issued in a 2005 German-language edition entitled Power-Baren from Bruno Gmuender Verlag. All his English-language erotica books have had second printings, and several have been InsightOut Bookclub and TLA Books selections.
For the Haworth Press, Suresha was the senior editor, with Pete Chvany, Ph.D, of Bi Men: Coming Out Every Which Way, copublished as a double issue of the Journal of Bisexuality (5: 2/3), and solo editor of the 2006 fiction anthology Bi Guys: Firsthand Fiction for Bisexual Men and Their Admirers. Both of Suresha's bisexual menŐs titles were named finalists for the 2006 Lambda Literary Award in bisexuality literature.
Suresha has been interviewed about bisexual politics for KPFA Pacifica Radio and about bear subculture and male bisexuality for Sirius Radio OutQ and numerous GLBTIQA (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Intersex Queer Questioning and Allies) newspapers. He has contributed to many GLBTIQA periodicals, including Advocate.com, Gay & Lesbian Review/Worldwide, Lambda Book Report, White Crane Journal, and RFD, and anthologies such as the 2004 Lambda Literary Award-winning anthology, I Do / I Don't: Queers on Marriage, from Suspect Thoughts Press. Suresha participates and presents at GLBTQ bookstores and conferences on aspects of his work in contemporary masculinities. He writes a blog on LiveJournal under the title Spunqdaddy's Beard, and maintains an online presence at http://www.suresha.com.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Suresha attended the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor 1976-8) where he studied creative writing, and Vista College (Berkeley, Cal., 1989-92), where he studied American Sign Language. For more than two decades, he has worked as a freelance proofreader for trade book publishers such as Shambhala Publications. He was married in October 2003 to Dr Rocco Russo, in Provincetown, Mass., and the following year they received a Connecticut civil union. He is also an ordained minister, ULC, and a member of the New London Green Party. The Russo-Suresha family resides in Connecticut.
