Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to take off my clothes?
- Most people do but it is up to you.
- Am I covered during the massage?
- Yes, you will be appropriately draped with sheets
or blankets during the treatment.
- Can I talk to the therapist during the massage?
- Most people find it more relaxing not to engage
in conversation. However, you should communicate with
the therapist regarding pressure, technique and your comfort level.
Being prepared for your massage
- Drinking several glasses of water before and
after a massage will reduce the level of soreness and
aide in the body's toxin removal.
- Depending on your general physical condition,
first time massages may leave you slightly sore. It's
like exercise - your body may have to adjust to it.
As tissue becomes healthier, you will appreciate deeper and
more vigorous massage.
- Always give the massage therapist feedback on painful
areas. These areas may need special care or attention.
- Be certain to let the therapist know of areas you wish to be avoided.
- Tell the massage therapist about past or recent
injuries. Especially those that continue to cause problems
or pain. The therapist may want to talk to your health care provider
about your injuries either to help the healing process or avoid further injury.
- Prior to receiving a massage be certain to let
the therapist know of all "diagnosed" health conditions,
prescribed and over the counter medications.
- Let the therapist know if you bruise easily and have
allergies to fragrances, oils or lotions.
Testimonials
To whom it may concern:
I have been under the caring and highly competent hands of Wayne Cotnoir,
CMT, since March 2003, while he was a massage therapy student at CCRI.
Although I have received professional massage regularly for more than 20
years, immediately upon my first session with Wayne, I realized that he has
a therapeutic touch far advanced beyond most massage students; better, in
fact, than some professionals Išve worked with.
In May, I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in my left parotid gland and
have undergone the difficulties of surgery and radiation therapy. Wayne has
selflessly offered his massage therapy services, completely gratis, as well
as personal emotional support throughout this period of treatment and
recovery. I believe that healing touch that has significantly helped to
speed my remarkable resiliency and healing during this process. I am
grateful for his healing assistance and friendship, and highly recommend his
character and professional work.
Sincerely,
Ron Suresha

I have been affected, over the years, with chronic
arthritis, throughout my entire body and head. As a
result, I underwent surgery, last May 2003, for a hip
replacement on my left leg. The surgery was successful.
A resultant factor from the operation was that my left
leg was now a 1/2 inch longer than my right leg. This
new medical situation caused a serious impediment in
walking since my back was off. My medical doctor
stated that a back realignment would resolve this
condition. During my recuperation, I endured serious
pain and an inability to walk or sit.
The condition became worse causing me to walk off
balance and to fall on two occasions. The first fall
caused multiple factures of my right foot. During this
recovery period, a second fall occurred causing a rotor
cup tear in my left shoulder and a fractured rib on the
same side. Surgery was recommended. The recommendation
was to have a second hip replacement on my right leg
and a left shoulder operation. This was rejected for I
did not want to submit to another invasive procedure.
By October of the same year, I chose message therapy as an
alternative because the arthritis became enflamed affecting
not only my shoulders and neck, but also causing chronic
headaches in addition to my existing medical concerns.
It was at this time that I was referred to Mr. Wayne Cotnoir
through a friend. The massage therapy was administered,
on a two day a week basis, by Mr. Wayne Cotnoir.
Under the care of Mr. Cotnoir, I began to enjoy some quality
of life and achieved greater mobility of action and lifting.
In addition, the arthritic condition, in my head, neck
and shoulders diminished. Because of noticeable the
improvements, my doctors advised a continuance of therapy
under Wayne Cotnoir.
One cannot verbally qualify on the treatments given by
Wayne Cotnoir. To be able to return to a normal and productive
life and enjoy a better quality of life is short of
being miraculous. I have high respect and confidence in
Wayne for his integrity, dedication and high professional
standards. I recommend Mr. Wayne Cotnoir without reservation.
Respectfully Submitted

To Whom It May Concern:
I recommend Wayne with every aching muscle in my body. This guy is totally
friendly, sensitive, and knowledgeable. I had surgery recently and he knew
just what to do to minimize scarring. If you want a little piece of
heaven on a heated massage table, call Wayne.

I have been very pleased and impressed with your massage and
stretching work. You are the only therapist who has given me
relief from the neck tension and pain I had been experiencing.
You will see more of me in the future.

Description of Body Work Modalities
- Swedish Massage: Focus is on relaxation and
circulation. It's more topical and pressure can vary from
light to firm. Typically used to warm and prepare tissues
for deeper work. Massage involves systematically applying
various methods to manipulate the muscles and soft tissues
of the body to maintain health and achieve relaxation.
Swedish massage consists of multiple specific massage techniques
applied by the Massage Therapist using the hands, forearms and elbows.
- The basic techniques are:
- Petrissage (from the French verb meaning "to knead")
generally involves lifting, rolling or squeezing of soft tissue and muscles.
- Effleurage (from the French verb meaning "to skim")
consists of long, broad gliding movements with the full spectrum
being determined by pressure, drag, speed, direction and rhythm.
This is one of the most versatile massage techniques.
- Compression (most commonly used in Shiatsu and other Oriental
approaches) is a method of vertically pushing down in
the tissue and muscles.
- Vibration consists of spasmodic movements of the
therapist's fingers applied to the back or limbs.
- Shaking generally involves a slight and fast movement of a limb.
- Rocking is a smooth and rhythmic movement of the body.
- Tapotement (from the French verb meaning "to rap, drum or pat")
consists of percussive movements applied with the hands.
- Friction consists of small, deep transverse movements made
with the fingertips.
- Deep Tissue Massage: Focus is on the deeper muscle
tissue; its purpose is to have a penetrating effect without
using an aggressive intent. This is accomplished by encouraging
release of muscle spasms and providing relief from the pain
they cause. Many people assume that the only form of deep
tissue massage is that they should be in agony during the
release of the musculature. However, this is not the case.
There are many ways to perform deep tissue massage, not all
of which require strong pressure and client discomfort. A
discomfort scale of 1 to 10 is often used to monitor any
discomfort through the treatment process. The deep tissue
massage work is done to your level of comfort. Deep breathing
can be especially helpful with relaxation during deep tissue massage.
- Myofascial Massage: Myo is muscle tissue. Fascia is a
type of connective tissue that not only binds our structure
together in a web arrangement, but also allows structures to
move against one another freely. If the capability of fascia
to perform its normal function is reduced via sudden trauma
or repetitive strain, adhesions will form to protect the body
from further damage. The person's movement may therefore be restricted.
